good neighbour SCHEME

We're setting up a Good Neighbours scheme which will be run by local residents and supported by the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity.

The scheme provides day-to-day support for anyone who may need help on an occasional or even regular basis.

All volunteers are insured and DBS checked. Most help is free, with the exception of  expenses such as petrol or parking.
Volunteers cannot take on tasks requiring trained professionals or the emergency services.

DO YOU NEED HELP?

There are lots of ways in which a volunteer could help out with the occasional things that can make all the difference.

A lift to the shops or your Doctors Surgery, collecting shopping; small household jobs like changing a light-bulb or opening a jar, walking the dog or just popping round for a chat over a cup of tea.

Please let us know if we can help YOU in any way. Here are just a few ideas of what we could do:

  • Occasional lift to doctors, lunch clubs, shops, etc.

  • Befriending – popping round for a chat over a cup of tea

  • Form filling / letter writing / help with using a computer

  • Collecting prescriptions / pensions / occasional help with shopping

  • Small household repairs/practical tasks (such as changing a light bulb)

  • Pet-care / dog-walking etc.

  • Indoor plant watering / light gardening

could you help others?

Would you like to help people in your community? Could you volunteer on a regular or even one-off basis?

A Good Neighbour Scheme is a voluntary group run by local residents who recognise the value in having ‘good neighbours’, particularly where public transport and other local services can be limited or where villagers don't have family nearby.

Volunteers decide on the help they can offer, how much and on which day. Volunteers aren't expected to undertake jobs best left to the professionals.

Volunteers will be fully insured, DBS checked and be part of a team. Anyone needing help will ring a central phone number which will be answered by a volunteer phone-handler. The request for assistance is then matched with an available volunteer in the village.
